Large-Format 5-Axis CNC Machining for Non-Metal Materials

5-Axis Gantry Moving Machining Center for Non-Metal Applications

A large-format 5-axis CNC machining center with a moving-gantry structure for complex non-metal workpieces, oversized models and applications requiring multi-axis machining and fine surface quality.

The 5-Axis Gantry Moving Machining Center is designed for large and complex non-metal workpieces. Its moving-gantry architecture allows the machine concept to support larger working areas than typical table-moving configurations while keeping the workpiece stationary during linear-axis movement. The machine provides simultaneous 5-axis machining and is commonly described in the market as a 5-axis CNC router when used for model making, composite processing, wood, foam, resin and other non-metal applications. The supplied configuration includes RTP (Rotating Tool Point) functionality to maintain the programmed tool-tip position during rotary-axis movement. Machine configuration can be selected according to the required working size, workpiece type, table arrangement, spindle, 5-axis head, control system and tool-changing requirements. Exact specifications must be confirmed for the selected machine configuration before ordering.

What Is a 5-Axis Gantry Moving Machining Center?

It is a CNC machining platform in which the gantry moves over the working area while the 5-axis head provides multi-directional tool orientation. This arrangement is intended for large-format workpieces and complex surfaces that benefit from simultaneous multi-axis machining.

Key Features

  • Moving-gantry structure designed for large-format machining and oversized workpieces.
  • Simultaneous 5-axis machining for complex surfaces and multi-directional tool access.
  • RTP (Rotating Tool Point) function for maintaining the programmed tool-tip position during rotary-axis motion.
  • HKS63F high-speed mechanical spindle as stated in the supplied machine description.
  • High-precision ball screw transmission on the three linear axes as stated in the supplied machine description.
  • Linear-type tool magazine for multi-process jobs requiring multiple tool changes.
  • Configurable working size, table arrangement, spindle, 5-axis head, control system and tool magazine capacity.

Suitable Materials

  • Foam
  • MDF and wood
  • Resin
  • Plastics
  • Composite materials

Material compatibility, cutting tools, spindle parameters and machining conditions must be selected according to the exact material and application.

Typical Applications

  • Large model and prototype machining
  • Automotive styling and design models
  • Aerospace models, patterns and non-metal components
  • Architectural models and complex decorative forms
  • Casting patterns and master models
  • Industrial design, sculpture and complex 3D surfaces
  • Composite-material machining where the selected machine configuration is suitable

Moving Gantry vs. Table Moving

The moving-gantry concept is intended to accommodate large workpieces without requiring the complete workpiece and table to travel through the machine envelope. This can make the architecture suitable for large models and oversized workpieces. Final rigidity, accuracy, working envelope and dynamic performance depend on the exact machine design and configuration.

RTP Function

RTP (Rotating Tool Point) is used in 5-axis machining to coordinate linear and rotary-axis movement around the programmed tool tip. In the supplied machine description, RTP is included to simplify 5-axis programming and support accurate tool positioning during rotary motion.

Spindle & Drive System

The supplied description specifies an HKS63F high-speed mechanical spindle and high-precision ball screw transmission for the three linear axes. Exact spindle speed, power, torque, axis travel, rapid traverse and positioning accuracy are not stated in the supplied content and should be verified from the selected model datasheet.

Tool Magazine

A linear-type tool magazine is specified for applications that require multiple tools and automatic tool changes. Tool capacity and tool interface should be confirmed according to the selected machine configuration.

How to Select the Correct Configuration

  1.  Define the largest workpiece dimensions and required machining envelope.
  2.  Identify the workpiece material: foam, wood/MDF, resin, plastic, composite or another approved non-metal material.
  3. Define the required 5-axis operations, surface geometry and access angles.
  4. Select the spindle and 5-axis head according to material, tooling and machining requirements.
  5. Choose the table type and workholding method according to workpiece size and weight.
  6.  Confirm the CNC control system and required 5-axis/RTP functions.
  7.  Determine the required number of tools and tool-magazine capacity.
  8.  Confirm electrical, air, extraction and site requirements for the final configuration.
