Scrap reduces saleable output while still consuming material, machine time, labor and energy. Capacity and unit-cost models should therefore use good output and yield rather than theoretical gross production.
Maintenance, tooling and consumables can materially affect lifecycle cost. Buyers should define expected wear items, tool consumption, preventive maintenance, critical spares and service requirements before comparing offers.
Energy should be evaluated from the actual operating profile, not nameplate power alone. Compare productive hours, load pattern, auxiliaries, compressed air, cooling and other utilities using current tariffs and verified equipment data.
Downtime cost can include lost contribution, idle labor, delayed orders, overtime, quality losses, restart losses and downstream disruption. The correct model depends on whether the stopped machine is a true production constraint.
Total Cost of Ownership extends the decision beyond purchase price to installation, tooling, software, energy, maintenance, consumables, spares, downtime, training, financing and other lifecycle costs relevant to the application.
Payback period estimates how long it takes for net cash benefits to recover an investment. It is simple and useful, but should not be used alone because it does not fully represent lifetime value, risk or cash flows after payback.
Machinery ROI should compare measurable economic benefits with the investment required and the timing and risk of those benefits. Productivity gains, scrap reduction, labor impact, quality and downtime should be supported by realistic assumptions.
Machine hour rate should reflect the cost base assigned to the machine divided by a clearly defined number of productive hours. Using nominal shift hours instead of realistic productive hours can understate the true cost.
Cost per part converts the production process into a unit-cost model. The calculation should use real material consumption, productive cycle time, setup allocation, tooling, labor, scrap, quality and relevant overhead assumptions.
Manufacturing cost should be built from the actual production flow and include materials, productive machine time, labor, tooling and consumables, energy, maintenance, quality, scrap, secondary operations and allocated overhead.
Machinery cost in a feasibility study should include the complete supply scope and the costs required to make the equipment productive: freight, installation, commissioning, tooling, software, training, utilities and appropriate contingency.
Factory setup cost is more than land, buildings and machinery. A realistic budget also considers utilities, installation, tooling, software, training, pre-operating expenses, working capital, contingency and the path to stable production
