Machine Total Cost of Ownership: Why Purchase Price Is Not Enough

Editorial illustration of machine total cost of ownership: why purchase price is not enough with relevant manufacturing equipment and workflow

What is machine TCO?

Machine total cost of ownership (TCO) is the cost of acquiring, bringing into production, operating, maintaining and eventually disposing of a machine over a stated period. TCO is not the same as an accounting asset value or a single year of operating expense.

Which costs should be included?

Build one consistent cost model: (1) purchase and accessories, (2) freight and site readiness, (3) installation, commissioning and training, (4) tooling and software, (5) electricity, compressed air and gases as applicable, (6) service, preventive maintenance, spares and consumables, (7) expected downtime and quality losses, (8) financing and disposal or residual value. Avoid double-counting depreciation and cash purchase.

How to compare two machines

Use one analysis horizon, currency, productive-hours estimate, yield target and product mix. Compare total discounted costs where the timing matters. If productivity differs, calculate cost per accepted part or net cash benefit, not just total spending. Test base, conservative and growth scenarios.

Practical example

Illustrative inputs only: Machine A costs EGP 2.0 million to acquire and EGP 0.6 million a year to run. Machine B costs EGP 2.4 million and EGP 0.45 million annually. Over five years, ignoring financing, residual value and discounting, A = EGP 5.0 million; B = EGP 4.65 million. The more expensive purchase can have the lower simple TCO. Replace example figures with quotations and measured usage.

FAQ and next action

Is the cheapest machine the lowest-cost option? Not necessarily. Should lost sales automatically be included as downtime cost? Only where the machine is a binding capacity constraint and the effect is evidenced. Before purchase, ask SAKKARY MACHINERY to compare the required process, verified equipment scope and installation needs; financial assumptions remain the buyer’s responsibility.
