Short answer
Press brake tooling is part of the process specification. The punch, die opening, radius, height, segmentation and load capacity must match the part geometry, material and forming method, while remaining compatible with the machine and clamping system.
Start with the bend
Record material grade, thickness, bend length, required angle, inside radius, smallest flange, return geometry and surface protection. Review part orientation and collision risk before choosing a tool shape.
Verify force and capacity
Calculate the required forming force using an approved method, then confirm machine, tool and adapter capacity over the actual loaded length. Do not use a generic tonnage chart without checking its material and method assumptions.
Control the tool library
Assign tool IDs, measured condition, capacity, machine compatibility and storage location. Retire damaged tools through a controlled process and keep setup data connected to the part program.
Decision inputs
• Material and thickness
• Bend length, angle and radius
• Flange and return geometry
• Forming method and approved force calculation
• Machine and clamping interface
• Surface and marking requirement
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one V-die cover every thickness?
No. The opening changes force, radius, flange limits and part result.
Is the machine tonnage the only capacity check?
No. Punches, dies, adapters and concentrated loads also have limits.
Next step
Send the bend drawing, material, thickness and machine interface for a tooling review.
